Hip Hop Education

Participation in the academic situation.

Supporting the school and wider community to deliver learning through rap performance and lyricism.

Our school project based at Royal High in Edinburgh used Hip Hop Education to examine the cultural legacy of Scottish Philosopher David Hume. Hume wrote a notorious footnote diminishing the impact of slavery and promoting ideas of white supremacy. Commissioned by The David Hume Institute this work gave voice to young people’s views on the footnote in a contemporary context.

What is Hip Hop Education?

Hip hop pedagogy is not just about teaching hip hop, it's about teaching through hip hop; using its principles, its practices, and its culture to engage and empower learners.

For a long time other forms of music like jazz have been seen as worthy of study in academia, so why not hip hop? It's time to tackle the imbalance in music representation.

Engaging directly with students, we transform learning to improve education for children and young people by better understanding their educational, psychological and social development, as well as their experiences in their homes, neighbourhoods, communities and society. These experiences grow opportunities leading to personal development and social mobility.

How does it work?

Through face-to-face groups, we bring our expertise directly to your classroom. Our workshops are tailored to equip education stakeholders with insights from hip-hop culture, enriching learning and leadership practices.

Strength in a group

Using a range of engaging activity formats we build a group spirit which fosters and supports students while discovering leaders. The group works towards a performance which showcases their knowledge, written works and rap abilities. Delivered in the form of a cypher, the performances are powerfully moving and an honest expression of the thoughts and feelings of our underrepresented young people.
